Military Friendly and Spouse Friendly SchoolPiedmont Virginia Community College is a Military Friendly® and Military Friendly® Spouse School. PVCC  has repeatedly earned Top Ten designations for being military friendly and regularly receives the spouse friendly designation. 2021-2022 Military Friendly® Schools. Veterans Services 

PVCC is dedicated to creating and maintaining campus-community connections that ensure the entire spectrum of military students have the resources and support needed to successfully navigate their way through college and develop career pathways. Services include:

Apply Online for VA Educational Benefits (for Veterans and Dependents)

You may be eligible for Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program, so review the information available on this page. Please note: VMSDEP benefits are managed by the Financial Aid office.

Certificate of Eligibility

If approved for chapters 31, 33, or 35 educational benefits, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from the VA. Please provide the COE to the PVCC Military and Veterans Advisor who will then certify your courses for certification of VA benefits. 
Once a COE is provided, you will be permitted to attend your scheduled courses. No penalty will be imposed, including late fees, denial of access to classes, libraries, or school facilities, or require you to borrow additional funds due to inability to meet your financial obligations to PVCC as a result of delayed payments for education assistance under Ch 31, 33, or 35, unless you are less than 100% covered.   

Note, PVCC may impose a fee for the amount that is the difference between your financial obligation and the amount of the VA education benefit disbursement.  

Credits2Careers Veterans Portal

Credits to Careers logoThe Virginia Community College System (VCCS) launched CREDITS2CAREERS (C2C), an online academic and career portal for veterans and active-duty military members in 2017. C2C is designed specifically for prospective military and veteran students and provides prospective students with multiple academic pathways to apply any previous educational and military experience towards academic programs offered at VCCS schools like PVCC.

C2C is a personalized virtual counseling tool that provides military-connected users the ability to:

  • Easily and quickly create an electronic portfolio of military, work, and educational experience. The system will extract and record all components of the military career for which credit can be granted by VCCS colleges based on the military transcripts.
  • Augment the portfolio with additional courses, examinations, credentials or other achievements.
  • Learn about programs and classes offered by VCCS colleges for any career, as well as earning potential for the specific geographic area where one is interested in relocating or living.
  • Access virtual job and career information including a virtual resume builder and a comprehensive national database of jobs specific to the geographic area where one is interested in relocating or living.

Domicile Exception Policy

Military, Dependents, and Veterans: Exceptions to Domicile

The following covered individuals shall be charged the in-state rate, or otherwise considered a resident, for tuition purposes:

  • A veteran using educational assistance under either Chapter 30 (Montgomery G.I. Bill® – Active Duty Program) or Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 G.I. Bill®), of title 38, United States Code, who lives in the Commonwealth of Virginia while attending a school located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more.
  • Anyone using transferred Chapter 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits (38 U.S.C. § 3319) who lives in the Commonwealth of Virginia while attending a school located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of the transferor's discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more. 
  • A spouse or child using Chapter 35 Dependents Educational Assistance benefits (Public Law 117-68 amends Title 38 USC 3679(c)(2)(A) who lives in the Commonwealth of Virginia while attending a school located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of the transferor's discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more. 
  • A spouse or child using benefits under the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (38 U.S.C. § 3311(b)(9)) who lives in the Commonwealth of Virginia while attending a school located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (regardless of his/her formal state of residence) and enrolls in the school within three years of the Service member’s death in the line of duty following a period of active duty service of 90 days or more.
  • An individual using educational assistance under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) who lives in the Commonwealth of Virginia while attending a school located in the Commonwealth of Virginia (regardless of his/her formal State of residence) effective for courses, semesters, or terms beginning after March 1, 2019.
  • Anyone described above while he or she remains continuously enrolled (other than during regularly scheduled breaks between courses, semesters, or terms) at the same institution. The person so described must have enrolled in the institution prior to the expiration of the three-year period following discharge or release as described above and must be using educational benefits under either Chapter 30, Chapter 31, Chapter 35, or Chapter 33 of title 38, United States Code.
  • Active duty service members stationed outside of Virginia are charged the military contract rate which includes a capital fee.
  • Active duty service members who are stationed in Virginia or a contiguous state may apply for a domicile exception to receive in-state tuition rates.

Grievance Policy

The Virginia State Approving Agency (SAA), is the approving authority of education and training programs for Virginia. Our office investigates complaints of GI Bill® beneficiaries. While most complaints should initially follow the school grievance policy, if the situation cannot be resolved at the school, the beneficiary should contact our office via email saa@dvs.virginia.gov.
